Make Protein Count. Men need protein to fuel developing muscles. Choose low-fat protein sources. Eat less red meat and more chicken and turkey. Eat fish at least two times a week. Regularly eat plant-based proteins like tofu, beans and peas.
Add in Healthy Fats. Be selective with the fat you eat. Limit fries, onion rings and nachos; they are saturated fat havens. Eat heart-healthy fats like olive oil, canola oil, walnuts, almonds and avocado.
Get Enough Calcium. Men need 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day for bone and tooth health. Food is your best source of calcium. Aim for three servings of low-fat dairy products, such as milk, yogurt or cheese every day. Other calcium sources include vegetables, such as Chinese cabbage, kale, spinach, and broccoli.
Make Sure to Get Vitamin D. You also need vitamin D for good bone health. Especially if there is little to no fortified milk or fish in your diet, consider a supplement containing at least 1,000 IU.
Eat Iron-Rich Foods. Iron is important for energy. You can likely get enough iron by eating iron-fortified cereal, leafy greens or a handful of raisins each day. Men need just 8 milligrams of iron per day.
Get Active. For healthy bones, weight management and overall good health, get at least 30 minutes of weight-bearing activity most days of the week. To build muscle, strength-train with weights or resistance bands at least two to three times a week.
Tomatoes: This vegetable contains a special antioxidant called lycopene. Lycopene removes free radicals from the body that can build up and cause harm.
Fruits & Vegetables: these contain B vitamins, fiber, antioxidants and phytonutrients. All of these contribute to a healthy prostate.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids: These provide you with the healthy fats that are needed for your prostate. You should consume foods that are rich in Omega 3, such as salmon, herring, mackerel and cod, or take fish oil pills.
Fat: A little fat is good, but too much fat can actually increase the risk of prostate cancer. Fat secretes specialized proteins and hormones that can increase oxidation and inflammation in cells.
To reduce your fat intake, eat fewer foods that contain solid fats. The major sources for Americans are cakes, cookies, and other desserts (often made with butter, margarine, or shortening); pizza; cheese; processed and fatty meats (e.g., sausages, hot dogs, bacon, ribs); and ice cream.
Calcium: Men over 50 should only consume 1,000mg of calcium per day. Be careful not to exceed that dose for long periods of time, because a diet too high in calcium can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Sugar: Active men should limit their added sugar intake to 18g per day while sedentary men should consume only 12g. You can do this by drinking few or no regular sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, and fruit drinks.
Another thing you can do is to supplement dessert with fruit that way you get natural sugar and it's still satisfies your sweet tooth. Excess sugar in the diet can cause insulin levels to increase. High levels of insulin contribute to stimulation and growth of prostate cancer.
