Your Menstrual Cycle

During the menstrual cycle, our hormones are fluctuating all over the place. It is the fluctuation levels of the hormones estrogen and progesterone which cause the build up of the endometrium, the release of the egg (ovulation) and the flushing of the endometrium. The endometrium is made up of tissues which build up in your uterus in preparation for a fertilized egg. Once the egg is released, if it is not fertilized, your body flushes it out along with the endometrium. This is your period.

Causes Of PMS

It is the fluctuating hormones that cause symptoms of PMS in many women. Often times, levels of the stress hormone cortisol fluctuate, making our bodies crave certain foods. Serotonin levels fluctuate as well, affecting how we feel, causing us to feel anxious, irritable, and even craving certain foods. Sweets especially can temporarily raise serotonin levels. But so can exercise.

PMS Versus PMDD

While PMS (premenstrual syndrome) is classified as symptoms that occur between ovulation and the first day of menstrual flow, which interfere with relationships, responsibilities and every day life, there is another, more severe form of PMS called PMDD. PMDD, or premenstrual dysphoric dysfunction, is a much more rare condition, affecting only 2-10% of menstruating women. There seems to be a link between much lower levels of brain serotonin among women who experience PMDD.

What Is PMDD?

PMDD is classified by severe PMS symptoms such as depression and feelings of hopelessness, anger, tension, feelings of being overwhelmed, out of control and irritable. Women with PMDD often have difficulty performing normal tasks, keeping up with their jobs or school work, and have trouble in relationships during this time. These symptoms are all in addition of other PMS symptoms like bloating, fatigue and food cravings. PMDD is diagnosed when the woman meets at least five symptoms, especially those focused on mood-related conditions. Symptoms usually appear during the 7 days prior to menstruation, and ease off as the period starts. Millions of women experience PMS symptoms, and for many of these women, the symptoms may interfere with their daily life. Yet PMS and menstruation are conditions we have to learn to deal with and adapt to. Be sure to adjust your diet, exercise habits and general lifestyle to ease symptoms of PMS.
