What is ADD / ADHD?

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is also known as hyperactivity or attention deficit disorder (ADD). ADD / ADHD is a common condition that affects both children and adults, and symptoms can take a severe toll on quality of life for sufferers and their family and friends.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, between three and ten percent of children have some form of ADHD, and though some statistics claim as many as 70% of children will grow out of it, most experts find it doubtful that anyone ever really does.

Instead of waiting to "outgrow" ADHD symptoms, parents and children can learn effective strategies for dealing with ADHD symptoms now. The most common of these symptoms include:

ADD / ADHD CONTRIBUTING FACTORS

Those the cause is yet unknown, multiple risk factors play a role in developing ADHD.

Genetics. ADHD tends to run in families; if one or both parents have ADHD, chances increase for the child to have the condition. For some reason, this is especially true if the father has ADHD.
