Sage Brain Wisdom

By

Sage has been known for centuries as a beneficial herb with the power to heal.  Herbalists used it primarily as an enhancement for memory and as an overall useful herb for the head.  Today’s scientists are confirming its positive qualities, focusing on the herb’s abilities to protect against free radical cell damage and inflammation reduction.  Researchers are in particular examining the boost sage can give to memory and treating Alzheimer ’s disease.  The plant contains active compounds similar to those found in modern drugs and can be a safer alternative in treating the disease.

The compounds are found in both the twigs and leaves.  If you’re interested in using sage as your own memory booster, try some of the tinctures available at your local health store.  Additionally, you can use fresh sage leaves liberally in your salads and cooking.  To insure the qualities of the herb’s active ingredients stay fresh, be sure to minimize cooking the leaves, as heat tends to destroy these compounds.

I have to admit, I love herbs but sage is an herb I'm not terribly familiar with. I burn bundles of white sage for "cleansing" purposes on occasion, and I've made a spicy tea from the leaves for the same purpose. Cooking, I associate it mainly with thanksgiving. I did just get a pineapple sage plant for my herb garden, despite not being entirely sure what I would do with it though.

Think pineapple sage has the same beneficial properties of regular old sage?

Got any cooking or usage suggestions?
