5 Common Substances Used as Home Remedies

By

When an unfavorable situation or ailment takes place, the natural instinct is to search for the answer in a product at the store. However, many things can be healed and/or avoided by using simple, household items in a creative way. This is a look at which substances are normally found in most houses, and have extraordinary effects and potential in areas you might not expect.

#1 Salt

Just about every kitchen has a container of salt, making this first item extremely convenient. Adding flavor to your favorite foods is the primary use of salt, especially for things like fries, burgers, and pizza. Sometimes, these delicious foods might not be as good for your stomach as they are for your taste buds, and ironically, salt is also an effective way to reduce heartburn. When you feel the uncomfortable onset of heartburn, immediately drink a cup of water with a half of teaspoon of salt dissolved in it. Since salt is known to neutralize stomach acid, it will keep the acid from coming up, and relieve heartburn quickly. In the case of a toothache, press a heated bag of salt to your cheeks to ease the pain.

#2 Honey

The addition of honey will add that extra touch of sweetness to cereal, toast, and pancakes, but it also has a number of other hidden talents. It can combat headaches and migraines in three different ways. Have two teaspoons of honey with your next meal and a migraine should lessen. Or, if you are in too much pain to wait for your next meal, just have a tablespoon of honey instead. Combine honey with vinegar in equal parts, boil the mixture, and breathe in the steam for relief. Burns might get infected easily if they are not treated, and honey can work to prevent an infection, as well as quell the pain. When your skin is bruised, applying a cloth that has been covered in honey with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper is a good way to promote healing and end the painful soreness. Finally, for persistent coughs that will not seem to leave you alone, blend honey with lemon juice or lemon tea to substantially heal your cough and throat.

#3 Vinegar

As mentioned in the above section, vinegar is useful in calming uneasy stomachs, and it is also a treatment for varicose veins. Locate the veins that are visible and pat straight vinegar to them twice a day. Then, drink a glass of water with two teaspoons of vinegar added to it each day and night. Repeat this process for a month and your veins should start disappearing. Rubbing vinegar on a thinning scalp every night can restore the thickness of hair over time. Eggs, another common household item, are mixed with vinegar and rubbed deeply on areas of the body that ache. The trick is to make sure that the eggs are beaten well enough and only use one egg with one cup of vinegar in the mixture. After applying it, soak in a tub full of hot or warm-hot water, dry off with a towel, and rest. The aches you had should be significantly reduced.

#4 Ketchup

A condiment necessary for some when eating burgers or hot dogs is also a secret hair restoration product. Swimming and other activities often lead to hair discoloration or a loss of highlights, and ketchup, massaged and left in the hair for twenty minutes, reverses the damage. Be sure to rinse the ketchup out thoroughly after the twenty minutes have expired.

#5 Toothpaste

Everyone likes a bright and healthy smile, so toothpaste is a very common cleaning agent. Another use for it is to destroy bacteria and heal skin from pimples. When using toothpaste on the skin, be extra careful not to use it on sensitive areas or skin irritations. The above home-remedies are based on information gathered from other peoples experiences and are meant to be suggestions. They are not medically proven, so please remember to consult with your doctor for any illness and condition to get the best treatment options for your specific situation.
