Natural products are a recommended way to aid in you and your family's overall health and well being. They're also a great way to combat household pests and germs. The benefit of using natural products is that they are not toxic to your family or the environment. Following are some natural home remedies for pubic lice.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil derives from the Melaleuca tree, and is a natural antiseptic and antifungal. It is commonly used as a face wash for acne, and in an ointment, for nail fungus. For pubic lice, it can be used as an antiseptic to help the affected area after treatment, and for soothing insect bites. Concentrated tea tree oil can be diluted and massaged into the skin; shampoos are also available.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is probably known most for aiding in digestion, and as a main ingredient in gum and mouthwash. But the oil also soothes the skin and scalp, and is known to alleviate dandruff and the presence of lice. Lice do not seem to like the cooling effect of the oil. A soothing bath to relieve itching can also be taken with a natural bubble bath containing peppermint oil.

Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly is another safe, natural product that leaves no chemical traces. If the eyelashes or eyebrows are infested, petroleum jelly may be applied. It can also be used on the head, if head lice are present (note: pubic lice and head lice are not the same):

  • Apply the petroleum jelly to the scalp and cover with a shower cap for several hours; it is not recommended to wear the cap while sleeping.
  • Remove the nits or adult lice with a nit comb or fine-toothed comb. Metal combs are often more effective than plastic ones.
  • Shampoo the remaining petroleum jelly out of the hair; tea tree shampoo works well to accomplish this and is gentler than dish washing liquid, which is sometimes recommended.

Relief from itching

It is important not to scratch the affected area. Doing so can inflame the bite marks, or even cause a secondary infection. Try some of these home remedies for itch relief:

  • Take an oatmeal, aloe vera, or milk bath to sooth itching.
  • Dust cornstarch or baby powder on to your skin after bathing.
  • Apply calamine lotion after bathing.

Additional measures

  • Since pubic lice are generally spread through sexual transmission, refrain from sexual activity until the pubic lice are completely absent.
  • Inform any sexual partners about the lice.
  • Wash any possibly infected sheets, linens, blankets, and towels in hot water. Dry them on high heat. Vacuum the carpets and sweep the floors thoroughly. It is not necessary to "bomb" the house, as the lice cannot survive more than 24 hours away from the human host and its supply of blood.
  • Health care providers are there to advise you on any questions or concerns you may have. There's no need to feel embarrassed by your situation.

A friend of mine had pubic lice and they used the over the counter stuff from the pharmacy and it burned their skin. It was terrible, I always recommend using natural stuff if given the choice. It could have saved them lots of pain and embarrassment. Commented on HelloLife · April 1, 2009 at 2:19 PM

The best and quickest way to get rid of these pests is to spray the area with Deepwoods off. Commented on HelloLife · September 6, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Try using Licenex shampoo which washes away the lice and gets rid of the nits as well - but get a nit comb and comb through your pubic hair after the shampoo. Licenex uses enzymes to get rid of the lice not harsh chemicals. Commented on HelloLife · April 26, 2010 at 3:05 PM

Thanks: Love the safe, natural alternative. Have used Tea tree Oil and also stopped using too much sweet food and drinks to de-sweeten my blood. Will see if this works! Commented on HelloLife · June 21 at 1:23 AM
