The Correct Way to Groom Your Pet

By

Pet grooming is an essential part of your pet's overall health. Grooming improves the health of the skin, which is essential for the health and happiness of your pet. Just ten minutes or less per day of grooming can effectively keep your pet's skin healthier.

Brushing Your Pet

Brushing is one part of grooming that should be done daily or at least several times per week. The type of comb or brush used is dependent upon the type of pet you have. A wide variety of tools are available for brushing your pet. If you have any questions or want recommendations, ask your veterinarian or a pet specialist at a pet store.

Bathing Your Pet

It is important to brush your pet before bathing to ensure that all knots have been effectively removed. There is no time limit or set frequency at which any animal should be bathed, as this is based on individual preference and need. If your pet is dirty, a bath is probably a good idea. It is also important to keep water and soap out of your pet's ears. This can be accomplished by simply being cautious while bathing, or utilizing cotton ball in the ears. Be sure to lift the head up and pour water down the head to avoid the ears. You may want to use a sprayer when bathing your pet. Sufficiently wet the skin and fur and use shampoo that has been tested and approved for animals. Use the shampoo according to the directions provided on the label. Be especially careful to rinse your pet to remove all traces of shampoo, as leftover shampoo can be ingested by your pet or irritate the skin. After a good bath, towel drying is recommended. Remember to be gentle! Use towels to squeeze out excess water. Once the excess water has been removed, allow your pet to air dry, or you can choose to blow dry your pet. Some pets may not like the idea of being subjected to a blow dryer. Be patient and reassuring with your pet.

Nail Trimming

Nails should be trimmed at least monthly during pet grooming. It is important to be especially careful when trimming nails to avoid cutting too deeply and damaging the nerve or blood vessel associated with the nail. It is recommended to allow you veterinarian to cut nails if you can not see where this blood supply and nerve is located.

Ear Cleaning

While grooming your pet, you should always be sure to check the ears. Pets can be especially susceptible to ear infections, mites, fungus and wax. If the ears become infected, this can be cause for further complications. Good techniques for pet grooming are essential to the overall health of your pet's skin. With some practice, patience and persistence, you can learn to effectively groom and care for your pet. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, do not be afraid to contact your veterinarian.
