What Vitamins Do I Really Need

By

As much as 98% of us do not get the nutrients needed on a daily basis. Even if you eat a nearly perfect diet your body might still lack essential nutrients necessary for your general overall health. A single nutrient deficiency can endanger the whole body. Vitamins and minerals help your body work properly. Missing out on essential vitamins and minerals over time can take a toll on your body and lead to health problems. A good multi-vitamin is the foundation of nutrition and health. Vitamins are organic compounds your body needs to function normally. You must get them from a food source since your body cannot make them naturally. Only small amounts are needed since the body uses them without breaking them down. The purpose of a daily multi-vitamin is to give your body what you're not getting from your diet. Daily supplements help ensure we get proper nutrition every day. Fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, increase resistance to infection. They are stored in the liver and fat tissues in the body anywhere from a few to days to up to 6 months. Water soluble vitamins like the B group and C are not stored in the body. They travel through the bloodstream and any excess that is not used passes out in urine. These vitamins need replacing more often. The best way to choose a multi-vitamin is to look or one that has 100% of the recommended daily allowance for most of the vitamins and minerals. Be careful not to take too much (over twice the recommended amount) because that can be unsafe. The body can turn beta-carotene from fruits and vegetables into vitamin A. Beta-carotene is not toxic at high levels like pre-formed vitamin A is since the body will only change what is needed. Choose a supplement with beta-carotene over higher levels of A. Other necessary vitamins found in a good multi-vitamin are B6, B12 and folic acid. Vitamin C plays a role in fighting infections and is an anti-oxidant. Vitamin D can be made from small amounts of sun exposure a day but is also found in dairy, fatty fish like salmon and tuna, and cereal. Vitamin K makes proteins needed in blood clotting and is also beneficial for bone density. Men and postmenopausal women should opt for an iron free multi-vitamin. Taking a good daily multi-vitamin supplement will help make sure you are getting what your body needs every single day. Multi-vitamins will not make up for an unhealthy diet but it is good insurance if your diet varies. Eat well and choose a daily multi-vitamin that meets or exceeds the daily recommended levels for vitamins and minerals to give your body the best nutrition it needs.

I find that my busy schedule prevents me from eating as healthy as I should. I love to cook and know some really great recipes and understand nutrition and healthy dieting, but for a lack of time never want to prepare the proper dishes. I turn to the multivitamin to keep healthy levels of nutrients within my system. Without it I would probably only be consuming 40% of my daily required nutrient levels.
