What is Genital Candidiasis?
Genital Candidiasis, otherwise known as a yeast infection, occurs when the normal pH balance in the vagina is upset. This is a common irritation which can happen for a variety of reasons: a weakened immune system, antibiotics, hormone fluctuations, even the consumption of sugar can trigger it. Its possible to cure the infection pretty quickly and effectively, but the symptoms you have in the meantime can be embarrassing, irritating, and frustrating.Proper Diagnosis
Its important to diagnose your vaginal condition correctly. If you have a greenish, dark yellow or brown discharge, this is probably not a yeast infection, but indicative of something much more serious; talk to your doctor immediately. Secondly, if you choose an over-the-counter medication to treat your yeast infection and you misdiagnose, your next real yeast infection may be resistant to the medication you just took. What are the Symptoms of Genital Candidiasis?
Following are the common symptoms associated with a yeast infection:- Acute itching and sometimes burning of the vagina and vulva.
- Pasty, lumpy discharge. It can also be thin and clear, but it is unlike a normal monthly discharge in texture and volume.
- Discomfort, pressure or pain when urinating or during sex
- Yeasty vaginal odor like that of bread. A foul, fish, or sharp vaginal odor is a sign for things other than a yeast infection.
- Inflamed membranes of the vaginal area
- Unusually warm temperature in the vaginal area
Common Symptoms for Men
Symptoms of a yeast infection in men are similar. Men generally experience discomfort and pain during urination and sex. Itching and burning in the genital area is present, and the membranes can be slightly inflamed. A rash can also appear on the penis shaft or on the head of the penis. Discharge may also be a symptom.Preventing and Treating Genital Candidiasis
Here are some general guidelines for preventing and treating a yeast infection:- Eat a healthy diet which includes fruits, veggies, and probiotics. Probiotics to ensure a healthy vaginal environment include the active bacteria in yogurt, cranberry juice and garlic. Refrain from eating too many processed sugars, and drinking too much alcohol.
- After exercising or swimming, remove damp undergarments and shower and towel dry thoroughly. Moisture near the vagina encourages yeast growth.
- Supplement your diet with immune boosters like aloe and echinacea.
- Refrain from douching. Your body cleans itself, and douching only tends to upset the pH balance of the vagina.
- Refrain from sex until both you and your partner are yeast free, otherwise the infection will keep returning. When you do have sex, use lubrication if necessary. Penetration without moisture creates friction that triggers an infection, not to mention it can be highly uncomfortable.
