Morgan Freeman dies at age 74....

By

.....so said my waitress at applebee's a few months ago.  That statement sent my friends and I into a panic.  Who would narrate VISA commercials?  What about the third batman?!  WHAT WAS THE WORLD COMING TOO!?

Morgan Freeman wasn't dead, and I haven't talked to him lately, but I'm pretty sure he's still alive right now!  So where did our favorite waitress find out this information?  Of course, she saw it on facebook, and assumed it was true.  According to the 'Facebook Statistics, Stats, and Facts for 2011', 48% of young americans find their news through facebook.  And I would go out on a limb to say that the majority of the users that stay informed via the book of face are being lied to even more than the rest of us that use so-called 'reputable' news sources.  The reason I say that is because on facebook someone hears something, then posts it, then that gets reposted, and someone sees that repost and comments on it, then someone sees the comment and shares it to someone who reposts the comment in their own words until Morgan Freeman is dead.  It's like a giant game of telephone.

People joke about 'believing everything you read on the internet', but it is a huge nuisance!  There aren't whales in lake Michigan, you can't get a 6-pack by obeying 1 'weird rule', and the chance you're going to hit it big with penny stocks is minimal.  But, interestingly enough, I did all my research online.  How do I know Morgan Freeman is really 74?  That's what wikipedia says so it's true right?  How do we know those 'facebook stats' are legit?

How much of what you read online do you accept as true?  What factors determine that?
