Improve Your Mind and Body Daily
By HelloLife
A healthy mind and body will make every aspect of your life better. The team that your mind and body form must work together in order to enhance your quality of life and increase longevity. With so many ways to improve the health of both your mind and your body, it can be tough to know where to start. To help, here are some tips to get you started.
Exercise
If you are already exercising, you most likely have felt the difference it can make by giving you more energy and fewer illnesses. However, physical activity also stimulates your brain as it coordinates with the movements. Every exercise that you do requires concentration, and your brain is getting just as much of a workout as your muscles are. Some of the most popular forms of exercising are aerobics, walking, weight training, running, bicycle riding, and dancing. Be sure to listen to your body during workouts or activities to gauge how much it can handle, and never ignore any signs of pain. Stretching properly before and after exercising will reduce the possibility of injuries and add to the results you receive from the activity you have chosen.
Read
Reading is one of the most important things that you can do to engage your brains ability to think and process information. In the same way that your muscles get stronger when they are used, your mind needs to be used to become sharper. When the brain is not used, it suffers from a form of atrophy, and slows down, leading to health and memory problems over time. By reading, you are making sure that your mind is constantly working, and that means that it will stay in shape and be stronger as you age. Another tip is to try reading different types of books that will challenge your mind and create new pathways of thinking.
Eat the Right Foods
For optimum performance, the mind needs the right kind of fuel, which means feeding it the foods that will make it more efficient. These include essential fatty acids (found in fish oils, flax seed, almonds, walnuts, and olive oil), whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and low-fat dairy. Reduce your intake of alcohol, saturated fats, and trans-fats as you add the above foods to your diet.
Keep Talking
Similar to reading, talking actively works the brains functionality by forming thoughts. Interacting with people and carrying a conversation not only helps your minds cognitive ability, but can boost your memory as well. And because you are simultaneously talking and thinking, your motor skills will improve right along with your thinking.
Play Games
Crossword puzzles, word searches, brain teasers, and countless other games are designed to exercise the mind in a fun, healthy way. They utilize logic, memory, word recognition, math, and other integral functions that your mind is capable of. To get the most benefit from these activities, do them in short spans and avoid spending hours doing them. Although your brain needs the exercise, it also needs rest to become stronger.
Sleep
It is surprising to see how many millions of people do not get the right amount of sleep each night. You should strive for seven to eight hours of quality, uninterrupted sleep. Without rest, neither your body or mind can work correctly, your immune system will not be as effective, you will be more prone to illnesses, and your decision making ability can suffer. Sleeping is a necessity, especially as the body ages. Get a good nights sleep every night and you will stay younger, healthier, and smarter.
