High Blood Pressure Risk Factors

By

As many of us know, the lifestyle you lead can have a big impact on your health. As time goes by daily habits like eating out and rushing around and not having the time to eat properly, can have a negative effect on your health. The chance of you developing hypertension (high blood pressure) can be greatly increased by these bad habits. Smoking, over indulging in alcoholic beverages and not exercising enough, can all contribute to higher blood pressure readings.

Often called the silent killer, high blood pressure has few symptoms and can often go unnoticed for many years before it's diagnosed. This diagnosis usually comes after a series of blood pressure readings with higher than normal levels are taken by your doctor.

These professionals are trained to watch for the warning signs of hypertension, so they can advise their patients what to do to control their condition.

Having excess weight can also contribute to your chances of developing a high blood pressure condition. By taking off even ten pounds you can reduce the level of your blood pressure and start maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Those who find the time and energy to exercise - even moderately - will have the best chance of controlling or even reversing their hypertension. Walking as little as ten minutes a day can have enough of an effect to make a difference in your life and your health. By eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and cutting down on the salt and sodium you take in through your diet, you can greatly decrease your chances of developing or worsening a high blood pressure condition. Being able to handle your stress levels can also have a positive effect on your hypertension levels. Cigarette smoking is hard on your heart and lungs and is especially hard on your circulatory system, which greatly elevates your blood pressure levels. If you need help quitting, you should see your doctor. If you don't smoke, don't start.

The majority of people who are diagnosed with hypertension have Primary (or essential) hypertension, which means that doctors aren't sure of what causes the high blood pressure condition. The remainder of cases of hypertension are called Secondary hypertension and are almost always caused by other health and medical conditions.

Persons with kidney disease may have a problem removing the salt from their blood, and this in turn can cause high blood pressure to develop. Many health conditions that affect the circulatory system can have a negative effect on the blood pressure readings taken by your doctor.

When it's possible to treat these medical conditions, the hypertension can be more easily controlled or even eliminated. There are also certain medications that can have a negative effect on your blood pressure.

It's always a good idea, if you suffer from hypertension, to check with your doctor before taking any over the counter medications to ensure there will be no conflicts or complications from the use of the drugs.

Remember, just because your family may have a history of high blood pressure conditions, doesn't mean that you will develop it. With proper health and diet measures, you can decrease your chances of developing the condition, and live a normal and healthy life.
