Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that you get from sexual contact. In fact, many of the people that are infected with this virus never find out because they do not have the symptoms of HPV.

Some symptoms include: pain, itching, burning, and at its worst, an outbreak of genital warts. These symptoms can lead to a very serious health problem: cervical cancer. This year alone, 3,600 women will die from cervical cancer caused when HPV creates abnormal cells in the cervix.

Most times, HPV goes away on its own. When HPV goes away, your cervical cells go back to normal. However, if the virus does not go away on its own and these cells linger, these abnormal cells can turn into cancer.

HPV Prevention

Gardasil is a new vaccine that was developed to help prevent HPV, as well as genital warts, cervical cancer, and precancerous effects such as genital lesions. This vaccine only prevents four types of HPV, and currently, there are 40 types of the virus. It targets four types of the virus. Two of these types are responsible for roughly 70% of all cases of cervical cancer.

It is important to know that this vaccine doesn't treat HPV infection or the effects of the virus. Furthermore, those who have had the virus infect them in the past have less chances that this vaccine will work for them. This is why the FDA is stressing the importance of vaccinating at the ages of 11 and 12, before any sexual activity is likely to have occurred. As of now, the FDA needs to see more studies done on women above the age of 26 treated with the vaccine, Gardisil. You do need to have a series of three shots to get the full benefit of the vaccine. Soreness is the most common side effect and is felt where the shot was given. For those that have an existing HPV infection, there is an alternative treatment method that can help. As stated earlier, the vaccine does not treat existing HPV infection or its complications.
