What Are the Risk Factors of Cervical Cancer?

By

Much research has been done and publicized recently that 2 strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) cause nearly 70% of cervical cancer cases. We know that HPV is the most common of all sexually transmitted diseases, and will affect over half of all sexually active people at some point in their lives. There is no cure for HPV, but many who get it will ever develop symptoms, let alone cervical cancer. HPV is passed through skin to skin contact during sexual activity. It can be present for many years and most strains do not cause any symptoms. Because of this, many people pass it on without even knowing. Condoms provide some protection but since HPV can pass through any infected part of the body, they are not completely safe. HPV can be passed through areas not covered by a condom.

Factors That May Increase Chances of HPV

Behaviors that may increase a woman's risk for contracting HPV are: starting sex at an early age, having several sex partners, having a partner who has had many sex partners. Since most people with HPV do not develop cancer, doctors think that other risk factors play a role as well. Smoking, poor diet, history of other sexually transmitted diseases, long term use of oral contraceptives, multiple pregnancies, and a family history are all thought to play a role in the occurrence of cervical cancer. Poor economic status is also being listed as a risk factor because those women may not be able to afford regular Pap tests to detect abnormal changes at an early stage. HPV can cause changes to cervical cells which can be detected through regular Pap tests. Regular Pap tests are extremely important in order to detect any cell changes at an early state. It can take years for pre-cancerous cell abnormalities to turn into cancer. If abnormal Pap results are found, an HPV DNA test will be done and further treatment may be discussed. Weakened immune systems can also be a risk factor for developing cervical cancer caused by HPV. HPV can usually disappear without any symptoms because the immune system will be successful at fighting it.

HPV & Vaccines

A new vaccine is currently available to prevent certain HPV strains, including 16 and 18 which are linked to most cervical cancer cases. More vaccines are currently being researched and developed. It is important to note that the vaccines will not treat HPV that is already present in the body, it will only protect against future exposure to the infection. By knowing the risk factors and taking whatever steps necessary to prevent them, you may be able to protect yourself from becoming infected with HPV and lower your risk of developing cervical cancer down the road. Taking care of your health and body will help you in that mission. Regular Pap tests from your doctor and keeping your body and immune system at its best will give you the ammunition you need to fight off an HPV infection if you do contract one.
