Describing a Life in Chakras

By

My husband recently made a curious comment the other day.

We were driving in the car on our way to the grocery store when he said in a sad, far-away voice,

I wish I could loosen up more and enjoy life. I’ve always been this way, but lately it seems worse.”

I didn’t respond for a moment, because I wasn’t sure what he meant by “this way.” But as I thought, I realized where he was going with this... because I feel exactly the same.

My whole life, I’ve always had to be the responsible one, the hard worker and the people pleaser. Prior to this very moment with my husband, I attributed those traits to being the older sibling. There is a prominent theory that first-born children tend to be more serious than their younger brothers and sisters, and this is certainly the case with my sister and me. Whereas I’m cautious and tend to worry obsessively about everything – bills, my family’s health and the clarity of my skin are just some examples – she has a carefree and casual approach to life. She takes things as they come and rarely worries.

This theory went right out the window that day in the car, though, because my husband is the younger sibling in his family. Although my sister-in-law is not quite as nonchalant as my own sister, they both have an easy-go-lucky attitude that I downright envy.

What's My Deal?

To put things into perspective: my Tai chi teacher once told me I need to stop resisting life so much and roll with the punches.

So, while riding in the car, I began to wonder if there isn’t perhaps something deeper at work here. The truth is I’ve experienced things lately that are impacting my life as a whole.

At night, for instance, I can wake from a comfortable sleep and feel absolute panic. My thoughts run wild, wondering if enough money is in the checking account to cover the phone bill, if I remembered to call back a customer and contemplating how I can fit everything into my schedule for the next day. I believe these are anxiety attacks.

So, after a trip at the grocery store, I hopped on the computer and began to research why some people are more carefree than others. I found more than a dozen theories, ranging from a person’s upbringing to his or her previous love relationships. None of this was really what I wanted, though.

Then, in an “aha” moment, I stumbled across some information about chakras.

I quickly learned the chakras are “seven circular vortexes of energy” that start at the tail bone and end at the crown of the head.

Each chakra represents a different focal point of life:

  • Chakra 1 forms a person’s foundation and connects the physical body to the earth
  • Chakra 2 connects people to others through feeling, desire, sensation and movement
  • Chakra 3 rules will-power and autonomy and also gives energy and motivation
  • Chakra 4 is related to love and enables one to have strong, healthy relationships
  • Chakra 5 is located in the throat and relates to communication and creativity
  • Chakra 6 is known as the third eye center; it helps one see both physically and intuitively
  • Chakra 7 influences one’s connection to a higher power

Intrigued, I participated in a three-minute mini test that asked me a series of questions about my confidence, communication skills and spirituality. The results showed that only my first two chakras are strong; the rest are either weak or closed altogether.

Amazingly, these results are almost right on. I disagree with some aspects of what the test told me, but most of it I see as very accurate!

Applying The Knowledge of The Chakras

Now, some of you may be wondering about the legitimacy of chakras or thinking this is all a hoax. The Dalai Lama, however, frequently discusses the importance of chakras in everyday life. And the truth is that I’ve been feeling pretty out of sorts ever since the discovery of mine and my husband’s fertility problems last year.

Am I now willing to delve deeper into learning about the chakras and how balancing them might give me a firmer foothold on life?

Absolutely.

My goal is to research further into the chakras and find exercises to help me balance mine. There are books, audio CDs and DVDs that provide information and even offer guided meditation.

I’ll keep you posted on this journey of self-exploration and let you know how working on the chakras is influencing my life!
