Chicken Breast: A Great Meal Choice For Acid Reflux Sufferers

Learning to Eat with Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is a chronic condition that occurs when a backflow of stomach acid moves up into the esophagus. When a person eats a meal, stomach acid is produced to help digest the food we take in. However, if too large a meal is eaten, or is eaten too quickly, the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) will relax at the wrong time, and allow for strong stomach juices to build up and overflow in the esophagus. This causes the burning sensation known as heartburn. If the condition is left untreated, the symptoms can lead to more serious medical complications. The most effective way of managing the negative effects of acid reflux is to eat foods that are considered safe.

Meal Choices for Acid Reflux

While there are precautions that need to be taken to prevent the harsh effects of acid reflux that does not mean that all meal choices have to be tasteless. In fact, one meal choice can provide a variety of meal options: Chicken breasts. A skinless chicken breast has been proven effective to not agitating the symptoms of acid reflux. Chicken can be prepared and eaten by itself, or can be used in conjunction with other safe foods to provide low acid recipes and ease the symptoms of acid reflux.

Meal Suggestions for Acid Reflux

The important thing to remember is to select food choices that are low fat or fat free, and keep track of what foods do not trigger symptoms. Chicken dishes with vegetables and rice can provide a nice variety of flavors without causing acid reflux problems. Chicken pot pie is a traditional favorite that is full of vegetables for extra flavoring. For extra protein, chicken can also be added to salads for an extra bit of flavor, and complimented with a low fat dressing. For even further diversifying a person's menu selections, chicken can also be used as a substitute for other meats for traditional meals.

Types of Chicken Recipes to Avoid

While chicken breasts are a healthy and safe meal for acid reflux suffers, there are ways to prepare chicken so that it could be harmful to a person's acid reflux condition. Avoid normal fried chicken. The fried parts of the chicken breast can cause multiple issues on the digestive system of someone dealing with acid reflux. For those who love the taste of fried chicken, however, try oven frying a chicken in buttermilk. This alternative will give the desired taste without the ingredients that cause heartburn. Also avoid cooking chicken meals using any tomato based ingredients, as the acidity from the tomatoes can cause problems. It is also important to avoid cooking any spicy variations of chicken meals, or avoid using pepper in dishes.

Check with a Doctor

There is no one set diet that will work for every person. Each diet will need to be tailored to meet a person's needs, and keeping a food journal will help to note any changes in symptoms or work as a process of elimination to remove negative foods from a person's diet. While acid reflux is a serious condition, it can be controlled with proper maintenance and care to prevent the onset of more severe symptoms.
