National Wear Red Day

By

Have you already noticed the pink, purple, and red hearts decorating stores and schools? Well, not only is this a time to celebrate our symbolic heart for love and adoration of others for Valentine’s Day, but it is also a time to celebrate our physical heart.

On Friday, February 3 an American tribute will be made to recognize the disheartening fact that heart disease continues to cause disastrous effects in the female population. This tribute is being made in the name of the National Wear Red Day - the slogan of this national celebration - “Heart Disease Doesn’t Care What You Wear – It’s the #1 killer of women”.

But of course, heart disease is not only impacting women.

Did you know that heart disease has been the #1 killer for both sexes in the United States for several years?

Sadly, every 25 seconds, someone in the US suffers a heart attack. With statistics like this, I imagine that everyone reading this blog knows someone who has experienced a heart attack or stroke, or who is at risk for one due to high blood pressure or cholesterol levels.

Personally, I know several.

To recognize this movement, please wear red on February 3 and encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to join you. This movement will help to draw attention to heart disease among women as this is a disease that remains largely ignored in the female population, often being dismissed as a man’s disease… Perhaps next year, in addition to wearing red, you could help initiate a fundraiser to raise money for the effort, perhaps through a heart-healthy bake sale.  Other fundraising efforts through the “Go Red for Women” campaign have already raised over $44 million since 2004, directing funds towards research, education, and health tools.

What will you do this Friday? Will you be wearing red in honor of someone in your life?
