Are Over The Counter Head Lice Treatments Safe?
By HelloLife
While over the counter lice medications are widely used, it is important to remember that they still are pesticides, and must be used according to their directions. Misuse can cause serious repercussions.
Lice Treatments
Most lice treatments involve a shampoo, cream or spray that is applied to the hair and scalp and left on for a period of time, then rinsed. These are to be used in addition to fine-combing for the best results. Often a second application is recommended
Prescription Lice Treatments
There are a number of prescriptions available. They are used for lice resistant to over the counter products and must be left on for eight to twelve hours. Some prescription products, while used frequently, may cause eye and respiratory irritation, tingling, allergic reactions and asthma.
Natural Treatment
Most home remedies for lice involve coating the head in olive oil, covering with a shower cap and leaving on overnight. This should be used in addition to frequent fine combing of the hair. If you are wary of over the counter medication, you may want to try this method first.
What Else?
After treating the lice, be sure to treat the house. Bedding and clothes should be washed, combs and brushes should be sterilized and objects that cannot be washed should be put in airtight bags for four days.
