China Root: An Introduction

China root, Smilax China, is a deciduous plant native to Asia that can reach lengths of 12 feet or more. It is comparable to the plant Sarsaparilla, as both are in the same plant family of Smilax. China root is a climbing vine plant, and is noted by shiny leaves, a long prickly stem, and the presence of a red berried fruit. The roots are generally have a strong pungent odor, are sticky and bitter to the taste before proper processing has occurred.

China Root: General Uses

China root is a natural herb that is associated with treatment of several conditions listed below. It was used as a blood purifier, a diuretic, an inducer of sweat, and many other medically associated conditions.

  • Gout
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Psoriasis
  • Dermatitis

China Root and Your Skin

The powdered leaves and root of this plant were commonly used in addition to dressings for the treatment of skin damage, particularly burns. China root has been associated with an overall improvement in immune system functioning when taken orally, skin being a major component of the immune system. This improvement in immune system function is associated with decreased signs and symptoms of psoriasis and dermatitis. There exists a correlation with china root and certain antibacterial properties. For this reason, it was used as an anti-itch formula and to treat skin infections. However, more effective antibacterial agents have been discovered and are much more commonly utilized.

China Root, Sarsaparilla, and Syphilis

China root is in the same family as sarsaparilla. Sarsaparilla and china root both have long histories throughout the world associated with the treatment and prevention of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases. Sarsaparilla was commonly utilized by cowboys and pirates after fraternization with concubines and brothels.

China Root: Other Use

China root has been associated with an increased activity of the kidneys, by stimulating increased urine output, making it a know diuretic. This increased urine output is commonly found with increased levels of uric acid. Uric acid is produced by the body as a bi-product that must be effectively removed from the body, as excess amounts are toxic. It is also been noted to improve unhealthy appetites and promote proper digestion. As china root has been associated with improved immune system function, it has been used for the treatment of arthritis, a condition known for improper immune system function where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells. Along with the immune system, china root has been used to decrease inflammation.

China Root: Preparation

The China Root is rich in starch, which can be dried and ground into a fine powder for use in tablets to be taken orally. The leaves of the China Root plant are typically cooked or boiled for the purpose of making tea. The berries are also commonly consumed raw and are known for quenching thirst. China root is commonly available through herbal tablets and multivitamins.
