Hair Loss FAQs

By

Finding a large wad of your hair in the shower drain can be a traumatic experience. If you know you are balding, it can be a depressing reminder. But not knowing why your hair is falling out at an unnatural rate is scary because there are so many reasons why it could be happening. These FAQs can help you figure out why you are losing your hair and what you can do about it.

How much hair loss is normal?

Humans naturally shed 50-150 hairs each day. All the hairs on your head are in three different phases:

  • growth, which lasts 2-6 years
  • rest, which lasts 2-3 months
  • Falling out after rest

Can stress cause hair loss?

Physical stress from illness or injury can induce temporary hair loss. It forces your growing hairs into a resting phase, which will then fall out in a few months. This condition is temporary, and your hair will be back in nine months or less. Emotional stress can cause your hair to fall out in patches where your white blood cells attack the hair follicle. You may need to seek treatment for this.

Can race affect hair loss?

When it comes to hereditary hair loss, white people, especially men, are more likely to lose hair than other races. Whites are four times more likely than blacks to lose their hair. Japanese men tend to go bald about 10 years later than white men, if they go bald at all.

How often to women experience hair loss?

Hair loss is common in women, but not as common as in men. Women have different hair loss patterns than men. Their hair is more likely to thin, so it is not as noticeable as a balding man. Women often have longer hair, so it can be easier for them to hide the hair loss.

How can hair loss be treated?

If your hair loss is not caused by surgery, illness or medication, you can take supplements or have surgery to correct your hair loss. What causes hair loss?

  • Heredity (male pattern baldness)
  • Alopecia areata (a disease)
  • Inadequate nutrition
  • Certain medications
  • Illness and surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Fungal infections of the scalp
  • Hair bleaching

Why does my hair fall out after pregnancy?

When you are pregnant, the high levels of estrogen make your scalp hold on to hairs that would normally fall out. A few months after you have given birth, your hormone levels return to normal and the hair falls out. Losing hair after giving birth is considered normal.

Why does fever cause hair loss?

When you have a fever, the cells in your hair shut down. Some of your growing hair goes into the resting phase and falls out a few months later. They should grow back.

What medications can cause hair loss?

  • Amphetemines
  • Lithium
  • Anticoagulants
  • Birth control
  • Beta-blockers
  • Gout treatment
  • Antidepressants

Your hair should grow back when you stop using the medication.

Why is my child's hair falling out?

Your child may have a fungal infection of the scalp called Tinea capitis. It is a common cause of hair loss in children. Tinea capitis causes the scalp to become scaly and flaky. This makes the hairs break at the base of the scalp. Hair loss usually occurs in patches. These infections are usually easy to cure with antifungal medication.
