Raw Food Diet for Canine Skin Disorders

By

Skin disorders have become increasingly common in household canines. According to veterinarians, skin and itch disorders are the body's natural mechanism for removing harmful toxins. As the skin is the body's largest organ, it is indeed responsible for releasing toxins from the body. However, this natural process should not be suppressed with topical ointments. Instead, a canine diet rich in nutrients that help to eliminate toxins is the most advantageous approach.

Common Causes of Skin Afflictions

Veterinarians agree that canine skin problems often result from food allergies, which are actually the body's attempt at removing toxins. Whereas humans often react to allergies with nasal symptoms, dogs react with skin disorders. According to nutritionists, corn, soy and wheat are the three most common food products linked to dog allergies. Unfortunately, grain products are used as the primary ingredients in commercial dog foods. It is thus not coincidental that a number of dogs suffer from allergies. Common allergy-related problems are visible in the following symptoms:

  • Change in the dog's coat regarding length, texture and thickness
  • Hot spots that a dog commonly bites, scratches or licks
  • Dry and flaky patches that resemble a rash
  • Frequent scratching of the head and ears

The good news for pet owners is that canine skin disorders are easily treated with proper diet. When dogs receive essential nutrition, their bodies are adept at healing themselves and working at optimal performance. Proper nutrition also allows dogs to remove toxins from their bodies, therefore relieving both skin disorders and food allergies.

Raw Food Diet to Relieve Skin Problems

Raw food diets serve dual purposes with regard to canine skin disorders. They not only cleanse the body internally, but they also remedy common afflictions like dry skin, itching and dandruff. Essentially, raw foods are beneficial because they eliminate the preservatives and chemicals commonly used in processed foods. Moreover, a raw food diet calls for more protein and fewer carbohydrates, thus removing grains entirely. The raw food diet is recommended by numerous pet owners and veterinarians alike. It is advantageous for a number of canine health afflictions that have been on the rise in recent years. Although hypo-allergenic commercial foods are available, they still frequently contain grain fillers and by-products. Studies reveal that those ingredients can produce allergies in canines over time, usually after two years. Moreover, allergies can develop at any time, and arise without warning. Several of the most helpful raw food products for canine skin disorders are profiled below:

  • Apple cider vinegar: relieves itching and dry skin
  • Omega fatty acids: moisturize skin from the inside and remedy such disorders as dandruff
  • Organically grown fruits and vegetables: contain no pesticides and insecticides, thus providing dogs with chemical-free food stuffs that do not trigger allergies and irritate skin

Diagnosis of Food Allergies and Skin Disorders

The first step in diagnosing food allergies in canines is to eliminate all current foods and treats and replace them with entirely natural raw foods. Pet owners are advised to start slowly with this process. Commonly, a protein, starch and vitamin source make the best initial combination. Moreover, commercial dog treats should be replaced with raw fruits and vegetables. Green beans and broccoli make excellent treat sources that most dogs enjoy. Once pet owners see allergy symptoms begin to clear, they can offer a little more variety in the raw food diet. Veterinarians advise against beef products, as they are known to cause allergies in some canines. Chicken is the main protein source recommended by professionals, as it is easily digested. Fish and lamb both make strong alternatives to this meat. Moreover, some dairy products are acceptable in small amounts, including yogurt and cottage cheese. Pet owners should always consult with a veterinarian when dogs are believed to suffer from allergies. An entire physical exam may be necessary in order to rule out other potential complications. Once that occurs, the raw food diet is the best place to start for treating allergies and restoring health.
