HelloLife GuestIf my child is diagnosed, does it mean shots for the rest of their lives?

Dr. Jeff Chamberlain, MDIt can be emotionally trying when your child is diagnosed with diabetes. A lot of questions run through parent’s heads
“Will they need shots for life?â€
“Will they be able to live a normal life?â€
“Why did this have to happen to them?â€
It is important to know that kids with diabetes can grow normally and lead normal lives. Interestingly, kids who develop type I diabetes are more likely to become doctors than their peers. I have several friends from medical school and residency who grew up with type I diabetes!
Currently, if a child has type I diabetes, then they will need to be on insulin. This either means insulin injections or a pump. With all of the current research going into diabetes, there might be a time in the future that insulin injections will no longer be needed, but we do not know if that will be a few years or a few decades.
Stay Healthy, Dr. Jeff M.D.
