I heard that there is a quick and easy way to test for Candida, by spitting into a cup of water. Does this really work?

I have had several patients ask me about the spit test. You likely found this test while surfing the web, looking up yeast or Candida infections. I have looked into this thoroughly and I can confidently say that the Spit Test is a scam. From what I can tell, a marketing agent invented it back in the 1990’s to help sell an anti-yeast product. Supposedly, first thing in the morning, you are to spit into a glass of water. If after several minutes there are stringy tendrils going down into the water, then you supposedly have “a yeast infection.” The truth is that if your mucus is thick, it will form these tendrils; it has nothing to do with yeast. Your mucus will be thicker if you are dehydrated with a dry mouth (which most people are first thing in the morning). Unfortunately, there are a lot of honest practitioners and self-proclaimed experts who also read about the spit test on the Internet and fell for it. Consequently, there are honest people out there promoting it, because they simply never took the time to verify what they read. Probably the least expensive way to truly test for oral yeast is to do a scrapping with a tongue depressor, put it on a slide, then look at it under the microscope. This requires both expensive equipment and experience. Stay Healthy, Dr. Jeff
