Fats, Fish Oil and Omega-3-Fatty Acids for Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a problem for many people. Having high cholesterol can cause a variety of problems. Fortunately, there is new evidence that a diet high in fish oil, containing Omega-3-fatty acids, can help to lower your cholesterol level, and improve your overall health, and well-being.

Fish oil contains a unique fat that can be very helpful in lowering your cholesterol, called Omega-3. The body is not able to manufacture this fat on its own, so it essential that you obtain the proper amount from your diet. Not a fish eater? There are other sources of Omega-3 that can be derived from the flax plant and even leafy green vegetables.
What are Omega-3-Fatty Acids
Omega-3-Fatty acids are a fats found in fish oil and other foods. There are multiple studies that show the benefits of having fish oil in your diet. Consuming fish oil, containing Omega-3-fatty acids, will: lower your cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, and may prevent cardiac death. Research done by Mayo Clinic, infers that both men and women who have more fish in their diet are at a decreased risk for having high cholesterol. Fish oil can also help people who are suffering from arthritis. It helps to relieve the stiffness and joint pain experienced by arthritis sufferers. Yet another benefit, of fatty acid intake, can be a reduction in high blood pressure. Studies support the use of fatty acids in a person's diet, but where can they be found, specifically? Fatty acids can be obtained by many of the foods we eat. Here is a list of foods that are high in Omega-3-Fatty acids:
- salmon
- cod
- halibut
- sardines
- albacore
- catfish
- trout
- herring
- walnut
- flaxseed oil
- canola oil
- shrimp
- clams
- spinach
How do I Get More?
Eating a diet that is high in fatty acids and fish oil will improve your health, and could even save your life. Not only will you lower your cholesterol, but you will lower your risk for diseases caused by high cholesterol. Many people do not have a diet that gives them the proper amount of Omega-3-fatty acids, since it is not found in a lot of foods. In order to lower cholesterol levels and maintain a healthy body, supplements can be beneficial.
