There are several vitamins and minerals that might be beneficial for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis:

Vitamin D and Calcium, are essential if you have rheumatoid arthritis. If you have RA, there is a very good chance that you will be placed on a corticosteroid such as prednisone, sooner or later. These steroids can do wonders for the arthritis, but can cause decreased bone density. By supplementing with at least 1,200 mg of calcium and 1,000 units vitamin D a day (even before you are on the steroid), you can help maximize bone strength and minimize bone loss.

Folic Acid (folate), is an important supplement for people with on the drug methotrexate (methotrexate is a common drug prescribed for rheumatoid arthritis). Folic acid supplementation has been shown to reduce the side effects of methotrexate (it has been shown to reduce: stomatitis, gastrointestinal intolerance, bone marrow toxicity, and abnormal liver function tests).

Selenium, although there are no formal recommendations on this yet, selenium might be beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Here is why: Selenium reduces free radicals that cause damage to healthy tissue. People with Rheumatoid arthritis tend to have reduced levels of selenium.

It might seem like a pain to do, it is better to protect your children now, then wait until something bad

A healthy diet is beneficial for so many reasons, not only to alleviate inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. With this in mind, Collin, I agree 100% that it is important to instill healthy dietary habits in the whole family to improve the odds of better health for life.

For more information on diet and arthritis, here is a blog I wrote on this very topic: http://www.hellolife.net/arthritis/b/relieve-arthritis-with-diet-changes/

There is an excellent Supplement called Joints N Knees, which will certainly help RA. It has MucoZaq, a proprietary extract of New Zealand mussles. It is an excellent source of Mucopolysaccharides (MPS), which besides suppying nutrients for joints, is a source of Natural calcium, magnesium and 6 other minerals requied for bone. MPS also supports the Immune system, the root cause of RA. You can begin to experience pain relief within 7 days.
